There are point-and-click adventures where, after just a few minutes, you can tell how much passion has gone into their creation. Whirlight – No Time To Trip belongs firmly in that category—the development team behind Imaginarylab has created a masterpiece.
Right from the opening, the game creates a mysterious atmosphere. A blue butterfly guides you through a surreal world that instantly brings back memories of classic point-and-click adventures.
The Story

Hector May is a slightly eccentric physicist with an unstoppable inventive spirit. After experiencing a mysterious dream, he sets out to build a machine whose true purpose is initially a mystery even to himself.
What begins as a strange dream sequence gradually unfolds into a captivating story about time travel, multiple timelines, and ultimately even the fate of the world.
What makes the game especially compelling is how the story constantly evolves, continually introducing new surprises without overwhelming the player with endless dialogue.

Puzzles

Overall, the difficulty ranges from moderate to challenging. My recommendation: Before you begin, turn off the hotspot helper in the options—this makes the puzzles even more challenging.
The first few hours are fairly beginner-friendly. The puzzles are well structured and mainly rely on classic inventory item combinations.
However, as the game progresses, the difficulty steadily increases. What I especially liked is that Whirlight keeps introducing fresh ideas throughout the adventure:
- Time Travel
- Different Times of Day
- Cooperative Puzzles with Two Characters
- Items That Only Work in Certain Time Periods

Some of the puzzles kept me thinking for quite a while. The balance between moderately difficult and more challenging puzzles is close to perfect. This isn't one of those modern adventures that you can breeze through in no time—provided you..., du verwendest keine Komplettlösung als Hilfe.
Graphics

One of the game's biggest strengths, in my opinion. Verice Bay is crafted with incredible attention to detail. Every location has its own unique character and practically invites you to stop and take in all the little details.
Especially impressive:
- Numerous small animations
- Varied Locations
- Classic Adventure Look
- Beautiful Color Palette

You can immediately tell that this game was created by people who truly love the genre.

Sound

The soundtrack is equally impressive. The music changes noticeably depending on your location. At times it evokes classic fantasy adventures, while moments later you'll hear reggae influences or more atmospheric, laid-back tracks.
The audio perfectly complements the game's atmosphere without ever feeling intrusive.
The English voice acting is excellent and fits the characters perfectly.
All in-game text and the user interface are fully translated into German. The only thing missing is German voice acting.

Controls

Here, the game deliberately embraces the timeless strengths of classic point-and-click adventures.
What I especially liked:
- Left mouse button for actions
- Right mouse button to examine
- Double-click to move faster
- Access the inventory using the mouse wheel or a key
Anyone familiar with classic point-and-click adventures will feel right at home. However, I once again recommend disabling the hotspot helper in the options. Doing so makes exploration feel much more authentic, and small objects become genuine discoveries once again.
Length

Whirlight also stands out for its length—even when compared to the classics, it more than holds its own.
Especially toward the end, the game expands significantly as more timelines and new gameplay possibilities are introduced.
It actually took me around 40 hours to complete the game with the hotspot helper turned off and without using a walkthrough.
I'd say it's about one-third longer than many other modern point-and-click adventures.

Gameplay Experience

This is where Whirlight truly shines. What I especially enjoyed:
- Wonderful Humor
- Numerous References to Classic Adventure Games
- Creative Time Travel Mechanics
- No Unnecessarily Long Dialogues
- Varied Soundtrack
- A Beautifully Crafted World
Another major strength is that the game never takes itself too seriously.
Many situations are delightfully absurd or wonderfully nerdy, bringing a smile to your face time and time again. The story is also so engaging that you'll constantly want to keep playing.

Adventure Veteran Verdict

Whirlight – No Time To Trip is, for me, one of the biggest positive surprises of recent years.
The game combines the classic humor of point-and-click adventures with modern ideas and cleverly designed puzzles, all set in a beautifully crafted world.
The varied soundtrack, the increasingly sophisticated time-travel mechanics, and the game's impressive length speak for themselves.
If you love point-and-click adventures, this masterpiece is an absolute must-play.
